Meeting of Agrarian Innovations

On March 24, 2021 , Session # 15 of the Agrarian Innovation Commission was held, at which Juba Maruashvili, FAO Policy Advisor in Georgia, delivered a report entitled "Activities of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Georgia".

It was noted that FAO aims to support the country's food security in Georgia, which is reflected in its active work in the implementation of both policy and various programs.

FAO activities in Georgia are based on 5 strategic objectives, which are in line with its regional initiatives and regional priorities; These include eradicating poverty, food threats and hunger; Improving the productivity and sustainability of the agriculture, forestry and fisheries sectors; Reducing rural poverty; Introduction of inclusive agricultural and food safety systems; Increasing the resilience of the population towards crises and threats, which is depicted in 4 priority directions:

Direction 1: Institutional Development;

Direction 2: Regional and sectoral development - development of value chains;

Direction 3: Food Safety Veterinary and Plant Protection;

Direction 4: Climate Change, protection of Environment and Biodiversity.

With this in mind, FAO is developing the capacity of the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture, and to this end, technical support has been provided for policy documents, including preparation of legislative and analytical documents and development of data management systems, coordination with donors was strengthened and trainings were conducted directly for the staff of the Ministry.

Active work is being done in the direction of sectoral and regional development, which aims to increase the competitiveness of rural farmers and ensure the sustainable development of the agricultural sector, such as potato growing, horticulture, wheat production, lactation and cattle breeding. Financial resources were allocated to finance irrigation systems.

Climate change, climate-friendly agriculture and good agricultural practice directions play an important role in the activities of the organization. Active work is underway on this topic, both at the policy level and in the field, in the direction of demonstration activities.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) continues to support Georgia's agricultural sector, positioning itself as a strong partner for both state and international donor organizations, and using its global resources to play an important role in enhancing the competitiveness of the country's agricultural sector.

Academicians Nodar Chitanava, Nugzar Baghaturia, Alexander Didebulidze, Adviser to the Minister of Environment and Agriculture Omar Kacharava, Professors Tsotne Samadashvili, Omar Tedoradze, expert , Dr. Gocha Tsopurashvili spoke about the great socio-economic importance of the activitieis carried out by FAO in Georgia.

A Guest from the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine Maxim Melnichuk

On April 2, 2021, a guest from the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine, academician Maxim Melnichuk paid an official visit to Georgian Academy, who wa hosted by the presiden to fhte Academy Academician Guram Aleksidze. Also, Dr. Oleg Kondrashov, Belarus , and Prof. Temur Vekua, representative of the company “ Viticulture Khareba”, Georgia were among the guests.

The President of the Academy informed the guests about the scientific research and publishing activities of the Academy, the structure of the Academy and the ongoing scientific work in the structural units within it. The guests toured the academy's advanced training space, mini-hotel, exhibition stands and exhibition hall.

The guest introduced the President of the Academy to the Rector of the Vinnytsia National Agrarian University of Ukraine Prof. Victor Mazur and President of the Scientific-Educational Consortium of Ukraine, Acad. Letters of Grigory Kaletnik, where they expressed their desire to sign memoranda of understanding with the Georgian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, to which Acad. C. Aleksidze received consent.

Acad. M. Melnichuk was awarded draft memoranda (memoranda in Georgian-Ukrainian and English-Ukrainian) with the signature of Academician Aleksidze; and the responsibility for organizing and signing the memorandums from the Ukrainian side and sending them to Georgia was taken over by Acad. M. Melnichuk.

General meeting of Georgian Academy of Agricultural Sciences

General meeting 1On March 26, 2021, a general meeting of the Academy was held in the conference hall of the Georgian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, where the reports by President of the Academy, Acad. Guram Aleksidze and Vice-President of the Academy Acad. Givi Japaridze's on the activities of the Academy in 2020 was delivered.

It was mentioned about the activity of the members of the Academy, which they showed in the form of proposals and recommendations on the prospects of agricultural development in Georgia in the Covid-19 pandemic and its aftermath.

The Ministry of Environment and Agriculture's immediate response to these issues and the meeting held at the Ministry with the academy scientists, the proposals and decisions made there were noted.

Scientific-practical conferences, seminars, round tables, memoranda, literature published at the academy and other events held in 2020 were also mentioned, as well as the future goals and objectives of the academy.

The Academic-Secretaries of the Scientific Departments of the Academy, Academicians G. Margvelashvili, J. Gugushvili, R. Makharoblidze, G. Gagoshidze, Head of Adjara Scientific-Coordination Center, Acad. Z. Putkaradze and the Chairman of the Agrarian Innovation Commission of the Academy, and Acad. A. Didebulidze took active part in the discussion.

The meeting was informed by the Chairman of the Expert-Competition Commission of the Academy, Acad. N. Chitanava.

It was noted that the competition is attended by Dr. Zviad Tiginashvili in the Scientific Department of Environmental Protection and Forestry, and in the scientific department of agro-engineering Dr. Shorena Kupreishvili and Dr. Mamuka Benashvili.

After the reports of the scholarship contestants (information about the scholarships of the scholarship holders) a secret ballot was held, as a result of which two candidates were elected as scholarship holders of the Georgian Academy of Agricultural Sciences. Zviad Tiginashvili in the Scientific Department of Environmental Protection and Forestry, and Mamuka Benashvili in the Scientific Department of Agroengineering.

Topic: Innovative technologies for Bee Perga production

Bee perga meetingOn March 23 of the current year, in the meeting hall of the Georgian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, a round table was organized by the Scientific Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary of the Academy on the topic: "Industrial mastery of innovative technology of bee perga production."

The round table was attended by members of the Scientific Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine: Academician-Secretary of the Department, Academician Jemal Gugushvili, Academicians: T. Kurashvili and G. Tkemaladze, Academic Secretary of Scientific Departments S / M Dr. M. Barvenashvili and invited guests.

The event was opened and the welcoming speech was addressed to the audience by the Academician-Secretary of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science Department of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Academician J. Gugushvili.

He spoke briefly about the importance of bees and the products they produce, highlighting their positive impact on human health. The floor was then given to the SMM Doctor, Prof. G. Madzgharashvili. It is noteworthy that Mr. Gogi is the author of numerous innovations in the field of artificial feeding for bees.

This time his presentation dealt with: "Industrial use of innovative technology for bee preparation", where he introduced to the listeners the technology of hee preparation without bee nest, which allows to accelerate its production process and radically reduce the market price. He pointed out that cheo, also called bee bread, is a bee protein food. It contains amino acids, vitamins and enzymes. It is characterized by pronounced antitoxic properties, help reduce inflammatory processes in the human body, as well as fight infections and stop tumor processes.

Unlike the natural one produced by the technology developed by Madzgharashvili, in which microbes can appear due to different circumstances, it inhibits the growth of microbes in it. This is evidenced by studies conducted in Lugar and Biotex laboratories and experiments on laboratory white mice.
After the report, Mr. T. delivered a speech. Ghoghoberidze and R. Zirakashvili, who liked Professor G. The technology presented by Madzgharashvili and noted that it is a new word in the field of Georgian beekeeping. The desire was expressed to discuss the issue in the presence of doctors as well, as Cheo is also very important from a medical point of view and deserves special attention.

March 21 – International Day of Forest 21

On March 19, 2021, a thematic session dedicated to the International Forest Day was organized by the Environmental Protection and Forestry Department of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences of Georgia.

The session was attended by members of the Scientific Department of Environmental Protection and Forestry: Vice-President of the Academy, Academician Givi Japaridze, Deputy Academician-Secretary of the Department, Academician Giorgi Gagoshidze, Dr. Anatoli Giorgadze, GAAS academicians, members of scientific institutes, organizations, and invited guests.

The session was opened by the Vice-President of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Academician Givi Japaridze. After a short greeting, he spoke about the important issues related to the forests of Georgia, the current problems and ways to solve them.

He also stressed the need to train highly qualified forestry specialists in the country and the interest of the younger generation in this vital specialty for the country. Then Acad. C. Japaridze gave a speech to Ms. Nato Sultanishvili, who delivered a speech on the topic: "Protected Areas of Georgia - Current Situation and Prospects." The speaker spoke about the importance of protected areas and their role in biodiversity conservation. He noted that the development of a system of protected areas is a strong guarantee of the country's ecological security and conservation. She informed the audience about the goals of protected areas, ongoing conservation projects in protected areas, such as the reintroduction of Jairn in Vashlovani protected areas; During the report, certain issues were covered by the co-rapporteur Mr. Z. Tiginashvili, which made the report even more interesting.

The session was summed up by the Vice-President of the Academy, Academician G. Japaridze, who thanked the speakers and the attending public for their arrival, noted that such meetings would help to solve problematic forest-related issues rationally.

Academician Nodar Chitanava - 85

Academician Nodar Chitanava March 10, 2021 will mark the 85th anniversary of the birth of Academician Nodar Chitanava, a full member of the Georgian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and the 60th anniversary of his scientific, pedagogical and public activities.

Academician Nodar Chitanava graduated from the Georgian Polytechnic Institute, since 1959 he has worked as a collective farmer, construction brigade brigadier, in Communist and party organizations, Minister of Agriculture of Georgia, First Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers, Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Georgia; then as a Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Georgian SSR, Minister of Agriculture, Food Industry and Forestry of the Republic of Georgia. He Signed the Act on Restoration of State Independence of Georgia (April 9, 1991).

He is a Doctor of Economic Sciences, Professor, a full member of the Georgian Academy of Agricultural Sciences – Academician, author of 134 scientific papers, including 14 monographs and 17 recommendations. He participated in many local and international conferences, symposia and congresses and was awarded two orders of the Red Banner of Labor.

Currently, he works fruitfully at Georgian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, where he is an advisor and member of the Presidium of the Academy.

The Presidium of the Georgian Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the entire staff of the Academy congratulate Mr. Nodar on remarkable dates, wish him health, long life and fruitful creative scientific, pedagogical and public activities.

Memory of Academician Archil Vashakidze

Academician Archil VashakidzeAcademician of the Georgian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, full member of the Georgian Academy of Energy, Academician of the International Academy of High School Sciences, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Archil Vashakidze passed.

Professor Archil vashakidze scientific, pedagogical and public activities are well known to our society and to Georgian scientists working in the field of agriculture.

Archil was born on May 30, 1943 in the city of Tbilisi. In 1960 he graduated from Tbilisi Secondary School No. 55, and in 1967 from the Faculty of Energy of the Georgian Polytechnic Institute and was awarded the qualification of an electrical engineer.

After graduating from the institute, he went through a difficult and time-consuming path working in science with dignity. Started working as a laboratory assistant at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Electrification of the Georgian Agricultural Institute. After graduating from the post-graduate course and defending his dissertation at the Scientific Research Institute of Mechanization and Electrification of Georgia, he became an assistant professor, associate professor, deputy dean of the Faculty of Mechanization and Electrification, then dean of the Faculty of Electrification and Automation.

Acad. Archil Vashakidze's scientific-research activity was dedicated to determining the optimal parameters of energy impact devices for living organisms, providing electricity to the mountainous regions of Georgia, using restored and non-traditional sources, their optimal layout types, typoses and required capacities. He worked hard formany years to create an adequate, simplified mathematical model of induction-connected circuits in electrodynamics and to establish a new shear system; The construction of the medicinal plant "Yuka Didebuli" and the creation of a distinctive manipulator of citrus, as well as the constructions of a quantum electric generator and others.

Mr. Archil was the author of 95 scientific papers, recommendations, and five inventions. During his tenure as Deputy Dean of the Faculty, Dean and Rector of the University, his contribution to the training of the younger generation and scientific staff was important, which he also successfully completed at the Georgian Technical University.

Academician Vashakidze Participated in many local and international international scientific and practical conferences. He was a member of the editorial board of scientific journals at different times, was awarded the Orders of Honor and the Order of Merit, various medals and diplomas.

Acad. A. Vashakidze worked successfully as a full professor at the Georgian Technical University, Faculty of Energy and Telecommunications, where he shared extensive scientific experience with future energy professionals.

In the face of Academician Archil Vashakidze, Georgian Agrarian Science has lost a valiant patriot, scientist and teacher, whose name will forever remain in the memory of his friends, colleagues and students.

February 11, and Georgian Women Scientists

February 11 is known as an International Day of Women Scientists. It was first established by the United Nations’ organization to support gender equality in the world.

Among the scientists of all times, women occupy a significant place; they have been among those researchers who made important scientific discoveries. We would like to tell a story of one of the distinguished Georgian women scientist Barbare Kipiani, who graduated from University in Brussels, Department of Medicine. She was a grand doughted of Dimitri Kipiani, an outstanding public figure. She used to deliver lectures in European Universities in Brussels, Paris and Geneva and appeard many times on the pages of European newspapers. At the same time, she was looking for national treasury in Europe which she later brought back to her country. Upon arrival to Georgia, Barbare Kipiani tought French language at Tbilisi Gymnazium, was an assistant of prominent Georgian Professor, linguist, Akaki Shanidze. When Russia was occupied Georgia in 2021, Barbare had to leave the country and worked in Brussels till the end of her life.

The name of Ksenia Bakhtadze, Doctor of Biology, Academician of Georgian Academy and a public figure is well known not only in Georgia but outside the country. One of the most honored scientists in the field of Agriculture, K. Bakhtadze graduated from Tbilisi Technical University, Department of agriculture, a plant studies in 1922.

In 1921-1926 she was working in Tbilisi Botanical Garden, and different testing stations in other regions of Georgia. Since 1927, she was working at Tea Testing Station in Chakvi and was directing the scientific department of tea selection and seed growing. New sorts and species of Georgian tea, created by her can be distinguished by their high taste properties.

Women Scintists Day is regularly celebrated at Georgian Academy of Agricultural Sciences. Succesful Georgian women working in the field of agriculture are awarded annually. Among them are: Academician Gogola Margvelashvili, Secretary of Scientific Department of Agronomy, Dr. of Veterinary, Zaira Kapiashvili, professor of Agrarian University, Dr. of Agriculture Mzagho Lobjanidze. The academy awarded with the scholarship a number of women scintist working successfully in the field of Agriculture: Nato Jabnidze, Ekaterine Katsitadze, and Darejan Dughashvili whose contribution in development of agrarian science is great.

Georgian Academy of Agricultural Sciences congratulates women with the day and wishes further success in science and public life.
