World Science Day

World Science Day for Peace and Development –is celebrated at Georgian Academy of Agricultural Sciences

       On the 9th of November, 2018, an extended meeting of the Presidium of Georgian Academy of Agricultural Sciences was held Mecnierebis dge 2018 1dedicated to World Science Day for Peace and Development which was founded by UNESCO in 1999. The first scientific conference dedicated to this day was held in Hungary, Budapest. Celebrated every 10 November, World Science Day for Peace and Development highlights the important role of science for society, and the need to engage the wider public in debates on emerging scientific issues. It also underlines the importance and relevance of science in our daily lives.

By linking science more closely with society, World Science Day for Peace and Development aims to ensure that citizens are kept informed regarding the progress in science. It also underscores the role the scientists plays in broadening our understanding about our wonderful, fragile planet which we call “our home”, and in promoting sustainable development of the world society.

The Meeting was also attended by the representatives of researchers, experts, consultants, graduate and doctorate students working in agrarian field.  Mecnierebis dge 2018 2

The Meeting was opened by Vice President of the Academy Academician Givi Japaridze. In his presentation he focused on the role of science in development of the country and from this point of view, he highlighted main directions of scientific activity carried out by the Academy, such as, regional projects, practical recommendations, investment projects, monographs and fundamental researches, participation of the GAAS in scientific projects outlined by the Ministry of Agriculture of Georgia as a chief consultant, and other.

Mecnierebis dge 2018 3Well recognized academicians Tamaz Kunchulia, Gogola Margvelashvili, Omar Keshelashvili, Elguja Shapakidze addressed the audience and talked about the achievements of world agrarian science, and among them accomplishments of Georgian agrarians in different fields of agriculture.

“ Innovative Technologies in Production and Processing of Meet”

     On October 25-26, Vinnitsa (Ukraine) Agrarian University hosted International Scientific Conference “ Innovative Technologies in Production and Processing of Meet” . Dr. Anatoli Giorgadze, Deputy of the President of Georgian Academy of Agricultural Sciences participated in the Conference and delivered his paper on: “Tendencies in Development of Georgian livestock industry   and some global issues in Agrarian Sector.”

The Conference was opened by a welcoming speech of University Rector, Academician G. Kaletnic.  Thirty-two Scientific- research and educational institutions participated in the Conference and among them nine participants represented different schools of science from Germany, France, Georgia, Poland, USA, and Canada.  

The following problems were raised and discussed at the Conference: innovative technologies of production in livestock industry and poultry, veterinary and hygiene, most recently implemented technologies in fishery and livestock breeding; also food processing technologies and engineering.

The Conference organized an exhibition which displayed ecologically pure products produced  by University students.

Field trips were organized for the Conference guests who visited Agrarian University Chinitinski college, observed the infrastructure and talked to the college students and professors.  The College owns land -660 hectares, an orchard, two cattle breeding farms, number of lakes in which fishery is developed. In the honeybee farms honey is produced by the college students. 

The Conference was summed up by the Rector of the University.

Round Table Discussion at the Academy with Participation of Austrian Professors and Specialists

 On October the 24th, 2018, at GAAS, a Round Table Discussion with participation of Austrian professors and specialists was held which was organized by Agro-engineering Scientific Department of the Academy and Coordinating Group of Melioration of Agriculture. The problem participants dealt with was: “Enhancing Academic Cooperation in Environmental Studies ( ACCES) ”.   Round Table discussions were about the implementation of e-learning in the water engineering study-course at Technical  University of Georgia. 

      The Round Table discussions were opened by the Vice President of GAAS, Academician Givi Japaridze who spoke about the el scavleba 2mission and goals of the Academy in development and support of not only science but also of youth education. He mentioned that implementation of innovative technologies and electronic methods of teaching- learning in colleges is very important.

The Round Table presenters were: Valibald Loischandl, Professor of Austrian Viena Natural Resource and Nature Study Scientific University ( BOKU); and Margarit Himelbauer, Professor of the same University.

el scavleba 3Also, Professor Irakli Kruashvili, National Coordinator of Melioration of GAAS, and professors Irma Inashvili and Konstantin Bziava. 

The problem of cooperation between the Academy and the college learning process was one of the central points in the discussion. Raising awareness regarding ecological and environmental problems among the students is one of the crucial problems  not only in Georgia but also in EU countries. The aim of the ACCES Project is to support and further develop college teaching-learning process which will be oriented on labor market demands in the field of agriculture and ecology.

 The rapid progress can be achieved in case there is a reasonable cooperation among developed institute and universities in Europe which is one of the main goals of the project.

about Regional Consultation on CABI - Asia and the Pacific Ocean Cooperation

(October, 16-19, 2018)

      The Conference organizers were CABI  - International Biological Research Organization and Agricultural Academy of Sciences of China. The representatives from the countries with which CABI has signed a mutual agreement regarding joint research activates were present at the Conference.

One of the main directions in CABI researches is invasive varieties and biological measures taken against them, as well as their implementation in practice.

        Among many other countries, the CACAAR  - Association of Central Asia and Caucasus Research Organizations also took place which was represented by Academician G. Aleksidze, the President of GAAS. His presentation dealt with the acute problems, such as pests which damage agricultural crops. The main focus was made on marmorated bug. He addressed the Conference participants to support his initiative regarding application of CABI biological means to fight against the pest which harms agriculture to a large extent in the region. 

         G. Aleksidze also raised the problem of enhancing cooperation between Georgia and CABI.

          The Conference Sessions were directed by one of the leaders of CABI – Dr.Trevor Nickols. The next meeting will be held in England, in September.

         The last day of the Meeting was dedicated to visit to Plant Protection Research Institute of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences of China which raised a live interest among the participants.

Round Table

Round Table Discussion at the Academy about Risk Assessment Problems

       On November 16, 2018, a Round Table dedicated to the problems of food safety and risk management was organized by Georgian Academy of Agricultural Sciences. The Round Table discussions were held with active participation of  Dr. Andreas, Professor of  Consumer Health Safety and Risk Assessment, University of Leipzig; President of German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment, Dr. Magnus Jager, Executive Director of the same Institute.

        Risk 1 The Institute works on the problems of health safety problems; it carries out independent scientific studies, assessments of risk related to food and animal forage, chemical substances and other consumer products.

       Being a leading Institute in Germany, it defines the standards of food safety and consumer health protection.  Based on the results of the scientific studies conducted by the institute, the producers and researchers can make scientifically proved decisions.

      The mission of the Institute is to make the world more secure by offering healthy food to population. Its 750 personnel work in nine departments of the Federal Institute.  Risk 2

                 In the work of Round Table the academicians, professors and administration took part. The meeting was opened by Academician Givi Japaridze,Vice President of the Academy. He spoke about the importance of food safety in Georgia which should be further developed in close cooperation with the leading centers of Europe sharing their experience and considering the world achievements in the area. In the fast developing world, emergence of new risk factors is eternal and health protection by offering to population safe and nutritious food is becoming more complicated and demands a great deal of responsibility from government and research institutions.      

Risk 3German Federal Institute carries out many activities, namely, it establishes close cooperation with Georgian researchers, provides training of the specialists working in the field, and enhances the opportunity of applying the latest scientific achievements being successfully implemented in food safety system on a national level. 

As it was mentioned in the speech of Acad. G. Japaridze, food safety and risk assessment is one of the major directions of the Academy and it is important to set close cooperation with one of the leading institutes in world to share the new technologies and approaches in this area.  

       The Academy is actively involved in the processes with regards to assessment of food safety, elimination of threats, scientific discussions of the problem, or drafting the new regulations on a state level.Risk 4

        The speeches were delivered by Academician Zurab Tskitishvili, Secretary of Food Safety and Food Technology Scientific Department who informed the participants about the activities of the Department and emphasized the importance of cooperation in this area, and by Dr. Andreas, President of German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment, who spoke about the achievements Germany has achieved in risk assessment and risk prevention. At the end he wished success to Georgian Colleagues and expressed his wish to continue fruitful cooperation with Georgian counterpart. In the Round Table discussion Georgian academicians Archil Vashakidze, Aleksandre Didebulidze, Professors Anzor Meskhishvili and Ketevan Dadiani took part.

     The Meeting was closed by Academician Givi Japaridze.
