On March 7, 2019, Trade Unions of GAAS held a Celebratory Meeting dedicated to the Mother’s Day and International Day of Women Solidarity – the 8^th of March.

The meeting was attended by the President of GAAS, Academician Guram Aleksidze, Vice President, Academician Givi Japaridze, Deputy President, coordinator of Academic Departments A. Giorgadze, also Academicians O. Keshelashvili and J. Gugushvili. Female representatives of the Academy were nearly all present at the meeting and listened with interest to the speaker Giorgi Diasamidze – the Head of Georgian Trade Unions uniting the employees working in the agrarian, trade and industry sectors.

The special meeting was opened with the speech of Givi Mosashvili –  Head of  GAAS trade unions who spoke about organization and changes in management of the Unions. 

 Giorgi Diasamidze – the Head of Georgian Trade Unions uniting the employees working in the agrarian, trade and industry sectors congratulated the meeting participants with International Women’s Day and wished success in their professional and private life. The heart of the speech was some recent approaches to the Union’s work, active involvement of the members in different activities and strengthening of the role of the Union in the fight against social and gender inequality, protection of the rights of employed. At the end of the meeting, G. Diasamidze addressed the needs of one of GAAS employees, E. Migriauli and delivered one hundred lari as a support from Trade Unions.

 Academician Omar Keshelashvili congratulated with the celebration, spoke about the woman’s phenomenon in Georgian mentality and read his poem dedicated to women.   

A lot of warm greetings were expressed during the meeting by G. Aleksidze, G. Japaridze and GAAS members, also Irina Bakhtadze, Ketevan Chipashvili and others spoke about the significance of the day and expressed thanks to the administration and trade unions for organizing wonderful meeting.

 Academician Guram Aleksidze visits India

On February 11-14, in the city of Jodhpur, India, an International Scientific Conference 13^th ICDD 2019,  on the topic: “Development of Arid Regions and its Results” was held. 

The slogan of the Conference was: Let’s change gray Area – into a green one.” The organizers of the Conference were: a Commission on Development of Dry lands together with Indian Association for Research of Arid Zones. The scientists from 200 countries took part in the work of the Conference; among them were well-known scholars, general directors of four international research centers.

Academician Guram Aleksidze made his presentation on “Climate Change and the strategy of limitation of its negative effects in Central Asia and South Caucasus countries” on the Session 1 – Impact of Climate Change in Dry lands. The report raised wide interests among the Conference participants, and the presenter answered the participants’ questions around the problem. Professor Adel El Beltagi, the leader of the Conference (former General Director of ICARDA, and Minister of Agriculture of Egypt) gave particularly high appreciation to the scientific approach shared by G. Aleksidze.        

Academician G. Aleksidze in his presentation dealt with nearly all important measures carried out in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kirgizstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia to avoid negative effects of climate change.

It should be noted that, all above-mentioned countries have worked out the strategy to resist the spread of negative consequences of global warming. The measures recommended include cultivation and growing of the plants which are characterized by high level of resistance against high temperature, frosts, saline soils, and deforestation. 

            It is important to share the experience of those countries; from this point of view, the cooperation of Georgian and Turkish specialists working in the field of plant breeding is critical, and they will continue working to cultivate new breeds of wheat which will be resistant to draughts and diseases and implement them in Georgia. The researchers of two countries will continue working together to address the agricultural problems which are mutual for the two neighbor countries.

        At the end of the Conference, a Declaration was adopted which gave particular recommendations on development of Agriculture in dry areas. The next conference will be held after two years. 

General Meeting of Georgian Academy of Agricultural Sciences

            On February 28, 2019, General Meeting of Georgian Academy of Agricultural Sciences was  held. The President of the Academy, Academician G. Aleksidze in his Report gave a detailed account on scientific work and other activities carried out by the Academy in 2018. Besides the members of the academy, the meeting was attended by invited guests: Academician Giorgi Kvesitadze, the President of Georgian National Academy of Sciences;  Otar Natishvili, the Academician Secretary of Scientific Department of Agriculture at the same Academy, Otar Danelia, the head of Agrarian Committee of Georgian Parliament,  Iveri Akhalbedashvili, the Head of the Office of Agrarian Committee, Dr. Levan Ujmajuridze, Director of Scientific- Research Center, also the coordinators of branches of science were present.

In the beginning of the Meeting, Academician G. Aleksidze awarded with Honorary Diplomas of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences the Authors who presented distinguished scientific work - fundamental or applied researches in 2018. 

In his Current Report Academician G. Aleksidze gave a comprehensive and detailed picture of the wide scope of work carried out by the academy including scientific contacts and partnership with the leading scientific organizations, the quality of fulfillment of different scientific projects designed by the Academy; He also dealt with the successful publishing activities, and finally dealt with the future plans and perspectives of the Academy.

Scientific Reports were also presented by the Heads of Scientific Departments of the Academy: Academicians G. Margvelashvili, J. Gugushvili, O. Keshelashvili, R. Makharoblidze, Z. Tskitishvili and Vice President of the Academy – Givi Japaridze.  

Academician Giorgi Kvesitadze, the President of Georgian National Academy of Sciences and Otar Danelia, the Head of Parliament Agrarian Committee gave high approval to the scientific work conducted by the Academy.

General Meeting also considered and discussed current issues and problems which are crucial for the success of the Academy as well as for agrarian sector of the country. At the end of the meeting the participants  positively evaluated the scientific activity of the members of the Academy.  

International Day of Women and Girls in Science celebrated at

 Georgian Academy of Agricultural Sciences 

       February 11, is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, an annual occasion established in 2015 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to support and promote the access of women and girls and their participation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics education, training and research activities at all levels. Now in its fourth year, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science has the support of over 68 countries, who have all committed to transforming the world through achieving equality and parity in science for sustainable development. UN aims to eliminate gender gap in science and ensure full and equal access and participation in science for women and girls.

International Day of Women and Girls in Science events are running worldwide,this year, it was celebrated for the second time at Georgian Academy of Agricultural Sciences. The Presidium of GAAS organized a meeting with young women in science who has significant achievements in agrarian sciences and are actively involved in research and educational institutions. 

The meeting was opened by Vice President, Academician Givi Japaridze who spoke about the significance of International Day of Women and Girls in Science founded by the UN, the importance of involvement women in science and encouragement of girls to pursue science as a career. He particularly mentioned the scientific achievements of Georgian women in agrarian sciences and their active participation in a Young Scientists’ Club of the Academy; He also highlighted future perspectives, offered to establish close cooperation in researches and promised to support their scientific and research work and solve the existed problems.  

 At the end of the meeting, Academician Givi Japaridze awarded women working in agrarian sciences with the Academy Honorable Rewards which were delivered to the following persons:
